Best Chocolate Strawberry Shake Recipe (Quick & Easy)
When the weather gets warm, there is nothing quite as satisfying as a thick, cold milkshake. This Chocolate Strawberry Shake combines the bright, fruity flavor of ripe berries with the rich decadence of dark chocolate. It tastes exactly like sipping a chocolate-covered strawberry through a straw!
Whether you are looking for a romantic Valentine’s Day treat, a quick summer dessert, or a fun afternoon snack for the kids, this recipe is incredibly easy to pull together. You don’t need any fancy equipment—just a blender and 5 minutes.

What is it
A Chocolate Strawberry Shake is a blended beverage that merges the base ingredients of a classic strawberry milkshake with rich chocolate elements.
Depending on your preference, it can be made as a thick, ice-cream-based dessert or a lighter, smoothie-style drink. In this classic dessert version, we use vanilla ice cream, fresh strawberries, milk, and chocolate syrup or melted chocolate chips to create a swirled, visually stunning, and deeply flavorful treat.
Why you’ll love it
You will love this recipe because it is totally customizable and naturally delicious. Unlike store-bought shakes that use artificial strawberry flavoring, this recipe relies on real, juicy strawberries for its authentic taste.
If you are a fan of our Strawberry Milkshake Dream or our decadent Chocolate Ice Cream, this shake is the perfect middle ground. It is sweet, creamy, and looks incredibly impressive when you drizzle chocolate syrup down the sides of the glass!
Ingredients
- 2 cups (about 300g) fresh strawberries, hulled and roughly chopped.
- 3 cups premium vanilla ice cream.
- 1/2 cup whole milk (or almond milk).
- 1/4 cup chocolate syrup or dark chocolate ganache.
- 2 tbsp chocolate chips (for texture, optional).
- Whipped cream (for topping).
- Extra strawberries for garnish.
(Note: For a thicker shake, freeze your strawberries for 1 hour before blending).

How to make
Step 1: Prep the glasses
Take two tall milkshake glasses and drizzle the chocolate syrup generously around the inside walls. Place the glasses in the freezer to chill while you make the shake. This helps the chocolate stick to the sides instead of melting into the drink.
Step 2: Blend the strawberries
Add the fresh strawberries and the milk into your blender. Pulse a few times until the strawberries are mostly broken down but still have a few small chunks for texture.
Step 3: Add the ice cream
Add the vanilla ice cream and the optional chocolate chips to the blender. Blend on medium speed until the mixture is thick and smooth. If you over-blend, the friction from the motor will heat up and melt the ice cream, making the shake too runny.
Step 4: Pour and Garnish
Take your chilled, chocolate-swirled glasses out of the freezer. Pour the thick strawberry shake into the glasses. Top generously with whipped cream, an extra drizzle of chocolate syrup, and a fresh strawberry on the rim.

How To Serve
Serve this shake immediately while it is frosty and thick. Use a wide straw so you don’t get strawberry chunks stuck in it, and serve with a long spoon to scoop up the whipped cream.
For an ultimate dessert experience, serve this alongside a platter of freshly baked Buckeye Cookies or a slice of rich Fudge Cake.

How To Store
Milkshakes are meant to be consumed immediately. They do not store well in the refrigerator, as the ice cream will melt and separate from the milk and fruit.
However, if you have leftovers, you can pour the mixture into popsicle molds and freeze them for a delicious chocolate-strawberry ice pop treat later!
FAQs
Can I make this a healthy smoothie instead of a dessert?
Yes! To make a healthy “smoothie” version, swap the ice cream for a frozen banana, use unsweetened almond milk, and add 2 tablespoons of raw cacao powder instead of chocolate syrup.
Why did my milkshake turn out watery?
A watery shake usually happens if your ice cream was too soft, you used too much milk, or you blended it for too long. For a thick, diner-style shake, use rock-hard ice cream and blend only until just combined.
Should I use fresh or frozen strawberries?
You can use either! Frozen strawberries will give you a much thicker, frostier shake without needing to add extra ice (which dilutes the flavor). If you use fresh strawberries, you may need a splash less milk to keep the texture thick.
Note
For an adults-only version, you can add a splash of Baileys Irish Cream or Kahlua to the blender in Step 3!

Tips and Tricks
- Always chill your glasses in the freezer before serving. A warm glass will instantly start melting your perfectly thick milkshake.
- If you don’t have chocolate syrup, you can easily melt a handful of dark chocolate chips in the microwave and drizzle the warm chocolate down the sides of the glass—it creates a delicious, crunchy “magic shell” effect when it hits the cold ice cream!
- Enhance the berry flavor by adding 1 tablespoon of Strawberry Ganache or strawberry jam to the blender.
